Cancelling Czech car liability insurance: when to send the notice

Czech compulsory car insurance (povinné ručení) ends at the end of an insurance period, and your notice must reach the insurer at least 6 weeks before. Here is how to work out the date.

Checked 30 September 2026

The 6-week rule

You can cancel compulsory car liability insurance at the end of an insurance period. Your notice has to reach the insurer at least six weeks (42 days) before that period ends. What counts is the day it is delivered, not the day you send it.

Miss the deadline and the policy runs for another period on the old terms.

Working out the date

Find the end of your insurance period in the policy or on the green card. Subtract 42 days — that is the last day the notice may arrive. Leave a margin for delivery and send it a few days earlier.

  • Period ends on 31 May → the notice must arrive by 19 April. Sending it in early April is safer.
  • Sending it by post? Allow at least an extra week.
  • A data box (datová schránka) or the insurer's client portal delivers quickly and gives you proof.

Paying quarterly or monthly?

The insurance period doesn't have to be a year. If your policy uses quarterly or monthly periods, you can end it at the end of any of them — again with notice delivered at least 6 weeks in advance. The anniversary is not your only option.

Before you cancel

Have the new policy start exactly when the old one ends. A car registered in Czechia must not go uninsured for a single day.

Start comparing offers about two months before the period ends — that leaves time to decide and to meet the 6-week deadline calmly.
