Open-ended contracts
A household can cancel an open-ended electricity or gas supply contract with a notice period of at most three months. The period starts on the first day of the month after the supplier receives the notice.
In practice: notice delivered on 20 March starts running on 1 April, and the contract ends by 30 June at the latest. To switch suppliers on a specific date, send the notice about four months ahead.
Fixed-term contracts and price fixation
For a fixed-term or fixed-price contract, check the contract and terms for when the fixation ends, what happens after, and how early you need to act. These terms differ from supplier to supplier.
The end of a fixation is a good moment to compare prices — but only if you remember it early enough.
Watch out for
- Delivery to the supplier counts, not the day you send it.
- When you switch, the new supplier often files the notice for you under a power of attorney — still check it happens in time.
- Electricity and gas are separate contracts and may have different dates.
